Midnight Pub

The Guest

"Hey! Hey buddy! Wake up!" I groaned, as my eyes fluttered open. "You're drooling all over my table!"

I raised my head and wiped the corner of my mouth, coming face to face with an angry lady. "I'm sorry," I mumbled, as I reached into my pocket for a handkerchief.

"What's your name?" "Krsnah. You?" "I'm Claire. Did you come in here with those bags?" She pointed at my bags. "Yeah," I nodded.

"So where are you from?" She prodded. "I'm from out of town." "Damn right, you're from out of town! Now don't drool on my table!" And with that, she was gone.

"Hey!" I looked up at the friendly face on the next table. "Hi!" "I saw you in Nuremberg at a FOSS workshop." "Oh!" "Btw, I'm Kyle." "Nice to meet you!" I smiled.

"That's Abacus Hex," he said, pointing at the gentleman at the table in front.

"Welcome to the pub," he said, raising his glass. "Thanks!" I smiled.

I stretched my arms and yawned. I wondered what time it was.

"Hey, do you know of any cheap motels around here?" I asked. "There's some guest rooms upstairs. You could ask Claire if they're available," Abacus offered. "Thanks!"

I dreaded meeting the angry lady again. I stood up and walked towards the back, where I'd seen her float away. I opened the door and saw a lone chef cooking something. "Uhm, excuse me!" He looked up. "Could I speak to Claire?"

"Claire!" he thundered, and went back to work. A moment later, she appeared. "What?" Then she saw me. "Hi!" I smiled nervously, "Would you happen to have a spare room upstairs?" "Mo's out right now. But I'll see what I can do. You hungry?" "I'm vegetarian."

She stared at me. "You're one of those special ones, huh? Follow me." I followed her up the stairs. She stopped, and looked down. "Your bags - get your bags!" "Oh! Right!" I went back into the lounge to pick my stuff.

Abacus looked up. "So, how it'd go?" I smiled and gave him a thumbs up, as I gathered my stuff. He nodded.

I hurried back to the stairs, and found an impatient Claire waiting for me. I followed her up the steep stairs, past a few doors to the end of the hall, into an office room. "Sit," she said, as she closed the door.

"You got an ID?" she asked, as she sat behind the desk. "Yeah." I pulled out my wallet and handed her my card. "How long are you planning to stay here?" "Umm, not sure yet. I haven't really thought it through." "Right," she said, handing the card back. "What's in your bags?" "Just a bunch of clothes, my laptop, a sleeping bag and a tent." "A tent?" she raised her eyebrows. "Yeah."

"Come, I'll show you to your room." she said, standing up. "Wait! How much is it going to cost?" "How much money you got?" "Not much," I admitted sheepishly. She laughed, "We don't charge guests if they're staying for less than 2 weeks." "Really?!"

"Yes, really," she smiled, and for the first time I noticed how beautiful she was. Uh oh! I looked away. I picked my bags and followed her out.
